Why this tour exists

A sacred mountain beyond Barcelona

Montserrat is an hour's drive from Barcelona. The mountain rises straight out of the plain, and halfway up the rock face sits a working Benedictine monastery.

The day centres on the Basilica and the Black Madonna, with a short walk to the viewpoints and the boys' choir when the schedule allows.

You travel by private car with your guide. The last stretch up to the monastery is by rack railway or cable car.

Program

Tour overview

Five hours door to door. Your guide plans the order around opening times and the choir schedule.

The day combines the monastery, the Basilica and a short walk to a viewpoint.

The monastery is home to the Basilica and La Moreneta, Our Lady of Montserrat. For the final climb you'll ride the Cremallera rack railway or the Aeri cable car — your guide picks whichever runs best that day.

Available: daily.

Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat

Benedictine monks have lived here since 1025, and about seventy of them still do. The Basilica behind the plain façade is lit by candles and stained glass. The pilgrims' queue moves slowly towards the statue above the altar.

Black Madonna shrine

La Moreneta, the small dark Virgin from the 12th century, is the patron saint of Catalonia. Pilgrims have been climbing this mountain to see her for nine centuries. Her dark colour comes from aged varnish. Visitors touch the orb in her hand and make a wish.

Boys’ choir (Escolania)

The Escolania is one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe. It sings in the Basilica on selected days; the performance is short and free to attend.

Nature walks

The mountain itself is half the reason to come. Short marked walks lead from the monastery to viewpoints over the rock pillars and the plain below.

Art Museum (optional)

The monastery has its own art museum with about 1,300 works, including Caravaggio, El Greco, Monet, Dalí and Picasso. Worth 45 minutes if your group loves art.
